MedStar Harbor Hospital to Debut Donor-Funded Mobile 万达彩票网 Center

BALTIMORE鈥MedStar 万达彩票网 will launch a new mobile health center September 14 to deliver primary care to MedStar Harbor Hospital鈥檚 most vulnerable communities, and support MedStar Sports Medicine research and education, at sporting events. The initiative underscores the core of MedStar Harbor鈥檚 relationship within its communities, its commitment to providing convenient access to quality healthcare, and reinforces its unique leadership position in sports medicine. It is supported, in part, by donations from the Baltimore Ravens, the France-Merrick Foundation and Kevin & D.J. Plank.

The 40-foot freightliner is easily recognized by the bold MedStar 万达彩票网 blue and maize colors and logo. Additionally, the Baltimore Ravens logo is emblazoned over the rear doors. Inside, the two exam rooms are separated by a restroom for handwashing, and a mini lab for point of care tests such as strep, flu, urinalysis, and pregnancy.

鈥淲e are providing services specific to the findings in our community health needs assessments,鈥 said Ryan Moran, director of community health for MedStar 万达彩票网鈥檚 three city hospitals: MedStar Harbor, MedStar Good Samaritan and MedStar Union Memorial Hospitals. 鈥淒ata show one of the main reasons residents don鈥檛 pursue healthcare is because of a lack of transportation. We want to break that barrier. We conducted focus groups to get community input on what should be offered and where it should go. Primary care is lacking most in the areas where services will be provided.鈥

The mobile health center will make scheduled stops in three zip codes in south Baltimore and northern Anne Arundel County. Referrals to specialists within the MedStar 万达彩票网 system can be acquired through the service as needed. Appointments can be made by calling 410-350-7511, though walk-ins will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Nurse practitioner Kelli McCallum will lead the mobile unit team of three: a driver also serves as registrar, and a community health advocate who will assist uninsured and underinsured residents with insurance applications. The advocate may also navigate patients to other support services such as food access, transportation, and housing.

鈥淧eople often think, 鈥業f I can鈥檛 afford to see someone, I鈥檓 just not going to go,鈥 which is understandable. No one wants a medical bill,鈥 said Kelli McCallum, NP. 鈥淪ome people don鈥檛 have insurance simply because they are challenged to navigate the steps to get it, so they don鈥檛 even try. We want to guide them through it. Having the insurance; having primary care delivered to them in their community, means better care management and maybe an earlier diagnosis. This is a new advent to healthcare and is exciting on so many levels.鈥

Through generous support by the Baltimore Ravens, the France-Merrick Foundation and Kevin & D.J. Plank, the mobile health center will also be equipped and staffed to attend sporting events, critical to sports medicine research projects underway with MedStar Sports Medicine.

鈥淲hile many sporting events now are on hold because of COVID-19, we know the mobile unit will be essential to use at events such as the Baltimore Running Festival, at schools, camps, rec venues, and Raven鈥檚 pregame events, for data mining sports medicine research and educating sporting communities,鈥 said , director of the orthopedics and sports health research program for the MedStar 万达彩票网 Research Institute. Topics would include cardiac issues, musculoskeletal issues, concussions and return to play.
